Wiring and Re-wiring

NOTE:   Wiring process has 2 phases,  the so called 1st and 2nd fix.

!!! WIRING FIRST PLASTERING AFTER !!!

1st fix > On a new build , usually the cables are channelled through cavity walls, partition walls, underfloor or in the loft in order to reach the desired destination, where the appliance will be installed (lights, sockets, showers etc.) This process takes place BEFORE any partition walls are closed , and also BEFORE plastering or rendering is done. Cables have to be concealed in the wall first (external or internal walls) and then plastered in order not to destroy the new built wall or insulation. Then what you will usually find is 1 or 2 cables sticking out of the wall in mid-air waiting for the second fix. This process takes about 2/3 of the total wiring time as it is labour intensive , and also calculations need to be made before you proceed with the actual wiring . Look at pic 1 >>>

2nd fix  >  This is basically connecting the appliance to the conductor you just pulled through, so it can work, and this process takes the other 1/3 of the total time needed. Look at pic 2 >>>

Re-Wiring is only for existing installations (old builds)> This is far more labour intensive process as rewiring requires removing of the old cables in walls, and replacing them with new . This implies a lot of chiselling and drilling, hammering, cutting etc... generates a lot of dust and noise.

Note : During any of the processes above, there will be NO ELECTRICITY in the entire premise until the work is carried out.

In conclusion : Wiring is placing NEW cables for NEW appliances that did not exist before. Re-wiring is replacing existing cables with NEW due to faults in the circuit.
